It has been 25 years since Susan Sarandon and Geena Davis threw themselves off a cliff as Thelma and Louise in the 1991 cult classic directed by Ridley Scott.

Nominated for five Oscars and seven BAFTAs, the iconic American road trip movie was ground-breaking for its time, starring women in roles that would have ordinarily been given to men.

Now, as fans of the film celebrate its landmark quarter-century anniversary, FEMAIL investigates what the cast are up to today.

SUSAN SARANDON

Susan Sarandon, 69, was not new to the screen when she took on the life-changing role of waitress Louise in 1991.

She had already won acclaim for starring in another successful cult classic -The Rocky Horror Picture Show - as well as in Academy Award-nominated romantic crime film Atlantic City.

After Thelma And Louise, Sarandon went on to win a Best Actress BAFTA for The Client, which she starred in opposite Tommy Lee Jones, and won the Screen Actors Guild Award for Best Actress for Dead Man Walking.

As well as Hollywood stardom, Sarandon (pictured posing after she was named Woman of the Year by Harvard University's Hasty Pudding Club in 1996) has continued to use her public platform to support worthy causes

She was also nominated for five Emmy Awards for her varied television parts - including her guest role as Joey's co-star Jessica Lockhart in hit TV show Friends.

Sarandon has continued to use her public platform to support causes she feels strongly about, and she receivedthe Action Against Hunger Humanitarian Award in 2006.

On Monday she made headlines for criticising Hollywood's inherent sexism at a talk at the Cannes Film Festival, claiming that if Thelma And Louise were to be made today it would probably be an animation.

She has been nominated for five Emmy Awards for her varied television parts - including her guest role as Joey's co-star Jessica Lockhart in hit TV show Friends (pictured)

She added that in some ways it was harder now than ever for women to get ahead in the film industry.

Sarandon is currently recording for an animated kid's film called Spark, starring Jessica Biel andPatrick Stewart.

She has also been cast in a US drama called The Death And Life Of John F. Donovan, featuringNatalie Portman andJessica Chastain.

GEENA DAVIS

Geena Davis, 60, playedThelma Dickinson, following on from her lead role in Sydney Pollack's Tootise and parts in Beetlejuice, The Fly and The Accidental Tourist.

After Thelma And Louise, for which Davis received a Best Actress Golden Globe Award nomination, she took on pivotal roles inA League of Their Own and Hero, in which she starred opposite Dustin Hoffman.

Recently she has taken on the recurring role of Dr. Nicole Herman in Grey's Anatomy and has been cast in a new drama called Marjorie Prime, alongside Mad Men's Jon Hamm.

After a messy divorce from actress Jennifer Aniston in 2005, Pitt has been in a relationship with Angelina Jolie and the pairhave six children together, three of whom were adopted internationally.

Pitt, 52, is currently filming for big budget zombie movie World War Z 2, as well as Allied, the French-Canadian war romance he stars in alongsideMarion Cotillard, which will be released in the US in November.

His other leading role, in War Machine, a satire of America's war with Afghanistan with a focus on the people running the campaign, is currently in post-production.

MICHAEL MADSEN

Michael Madsen, 57, who played Susan Sarandon's boyfriend Jimmy Lennox, has appeared in a staggering 170 films over his long career.

Since 1991 he has taken on roles in Fatal Instinct,Free Willy and Kill Bill: Vol 1 and 2 - as well as voice work in several video games including Grand Theft Auto.

He is better known for his iconic performance as Mr Blonde in Reservoir Dogs but also appeared in Iggy Azelia and Rita Ora's music video for Black Widow.

In a 2014 Vice article calledWhat the F*** Is Michael Madsen Doing with His Life?, it is claimed the star accrued '£400,000's worth of debt in the mid noughties', 'went to rehab for a drink problem and 'borrowed a million dollars off Quentin Tarantino'.

STEPHEN TOBOLOWSKY

Stephen Tobolowsky, 64, played Max in Thelma And Louise - but his more notable role may beannoying insurance salesman Ned Ryerson in Groundhog Day.

As well acting in a number of television shows and reasonably well-known films,Tobolowsky has a monthly audio podcast called The Tobolowsky Files, where he tells stories about his acting and personal life, and another called Big Problems - An Advice Podcast.

Tobolowsky stars in kid's flick Monsters At Large, which is out next year, as well as a comedy called Mamaboy about a male high school pupil who discovers he is pregnant.

'Brad turned to me and so kindly said, "Mr. Tobolowsky, would you like to sit in my chair? It might be more comfortable."

'I said, "It's alright, Brad" and he said, "You know, I'm going to get some coffee. It's a little chilly. Mr. Tobolowsky, could I get you some tea?". I said, "It's alright, Brad. I'll get tea later."

HARVEY KEITEL

1970s icon Harvey Keitel, 76, starred as Detective Hal Slocumb in Thelma And Louise but hefamously made a name for himself in Mean Streets opposite Robert De Niro in 1973.

He went on to star opposite De Niro again in Taxi Driver as Jody Foster's pimp in 1976 - and played thedevil in Adam Sandler's 2000 flop, Little Nicky.

In his latest role Keitel played the 'fixer' in a Direct Line advert, for whichThe Telegraph accused him of selling out.

In his most recent full feature Youth, written and directed by Paolo Sorrentino, Keitel starred alongside Michael Caine in a quirky tale of love, loss, regret, hope and family.

CHRISTOPHER MCDONALD

Thelma's controlling boyfriendDarryl Dickinson was played by New Yorker Christopher McDonald, 61, who was engaged to Geena Davis before shemet Jeff Goldblum on the set of Transylvania 6-5000.

His breakout role in Thelma And Louise, for which he had to gain two-and-a-half stone, remains one of McDonald's biggest films to date, although he also had parts in other hits including Fatal Instinct,Happy Gilmore andWithout A Trace.

Since the millennium, McDonald has turned his focus more to television, with parts inNorth Shore,Kim Possible,Boardwalk Empire and The Good Wife.

In 2013 McDonald washandcuffed and hauled to jail by Highway Patrol deputies after he was allegedlydrinking heavily with several male fans at a bar in Wrightsville Beach, North Carolina.

The arrest occurred at 4.30am in nearby Wilmington, with the actor reported to have recorded a .15 blood alcohol level - nearly two times the legal limit.

The star was released just hours later, at 7.20am, after movie bosses on his new film, The Squeeze, bailed him out for a paltry $1,000 (£694).

TIMOTHY CARHART

Timothy Carhart played sick rapist Harlan Puckett in Thelma And Louise - but his roles are not usually so dark.

Since starring in the Ridley Scott flick, Carhart has mainly stuck to TV, with a number of one-off parts in well known shows includingLaw And Order,Frasier and Mad Men.

As well as acting, Carhart has tried his hand at teaching.Carhart co-founded The Audition Centre in Chicago, where he instructed Julianne Moore, andalso founded and was the head instructor at The Film Actors Workshop in Ashville.
